Our approach

Why we offer a complimentary review

We’ve chosen to invest part of our marketing budget in complimentary reviews for Canadian IT professionals. We believe giving you a useful second opinion creates more value than another social media ad.

You get a clearer understanding of your tax and compliance position, and a chance to see how we work. We get an opportunity to introduce our practice through something useful. There’s no obligation to become a client.

Frequently asked questions

What to expect from your review, how to share documents, and what happens next.

Have another question? Contact Teplov CPA
Is the review really complimentary?

Yes. There is no fee for the review or the conversation about your findings, and no obligation to become a client. If you would like help with further investigation, corrections or ongoing services, we’ll agree the scope and fees with you before that work begins.

Is this the same as the Initial Review for new clients?

No. This offer is a second opinion on your most recent tax year, followed by a conversation with Alex. The Initial Review is the onboarding step for ongoing services: we examine your books, filings, records and government accounts to define the engagement scope and prepare your Compliance Roadmap.Initial ReviewHow We Work

Is this an audit or a guarantee that my returns are correct?

No. This is a high-level review intended to identify matters that may warrant further investigation. It is not an audit, assurance engagement or comprehensive verification of previously filed returns. The review does not guarantee that every issue will be identified.

Do I need to be incorporated?

No. We support Canadian IT professionals working as freelancers and sole proprietors, incorporated IT contractors, fractional CTOs, technical consultancies, and bootstrapped or services-led startups. If you’re an employee considering independent work, tell us about your situation so we can confirm whether a review would be useful.

Which documents will you need?

No documents are needed to submit your request. We’ll email you with access to your secure cloud folder and a document checklist. We typically start with your most recent personal and/or corporate tax returns and related Notices of Assessment. Depending on your situation, we may also request GST/HST or QST filings, compensation records or other supporting documents.

How are my tax documents protected?

We use a private Microsoft SharePoint folder created for your review, with access managed by our practice. Your documents are encrypted during transfer and while stored. We grant access using your email address, and you’ll sign in or verify your identity before opening the folder.

Do I need to grant CRA or accounting software access?

No. This review is based on the documents you upload to your secure cloud folder. CRA, Revenu Québec, accounting software and bank-feed access are not required. If you proceed with ongoing services, we arrange Authorized Access separately during onboarding.

Do I need a Microsoft account to upload documents?

Not necessarily. Depending on your email account and the sharing settings, Microsoft may ask you to sign in or enter a verification code sent to your email. Use the same email address you provided in your request and follow the invitation instructions. If you have trouble accessing the folder, contact us for help.

Who will review my information and discuss the findings?

We review the information you provide. Alex Teplov, CPA, will walk you through what appears in order, what may need attention, and the next steps worth considering.

How long does the review take?

Timing depends on the documents available and the complexity of your situation. We’ll confirm the expected timing once we have the information needed for your review. If you have a filing deadline or an outstanding notice, mention it in your request.

What happens after the review?

After your conversation with Alex, you can decide whether you would like further help. We’ll agree any additional scope and fees with you before starting further work. The complimentary review includes a discussion of findings; a written report and Compliance Roadmap are not included. There is no obligation to proceed with ongoing services.
